Location:
Sant Quirze del Vallès
Area:
800 m2
This project is located in Sant Quirze del Vallès, in the province of Barcelona. The owners’ previous garden project had been completed just before the lockdown in 2019 and, because of the rush to finish during the pandemic, they were not satisfied either with the final materials or with the design itself. A year and a half later they contacted us looking for a new proposal more in line with what they had originally wanted.
The previous garden design was too uniform. It used artificial grass of poor quality that had not aged well and was in bad condition. The finish around the pool and the path leading to it were made with synthetic decking that did not fit well with the rest of the house materials. In addition, the fence by the street did not provide enough privacy to the garden area. An olive tree in the side garden, in front of the kitchen, blocked circulation, had too little room to grow, and did not stand out in the garden.
Before
The proposed project begins with an outdoor dining area beside the direct access to the kitchen, with provision for a future integrated outdoor kitchen. The area was paved with the same tiles already used in the outdoor parts of the house, and a path in the same material was created to connect this zone with the rear garden and the pool.
To separate spaces and introduce planted areas, several anthracite-grey gravel zones were proposed. Their colour matches the house carpentry and enclosures and contrasts with the other materials. Rounded stones were chosen to ease movement and create drainage points, and a new high-quality artificial grass was installed. The proposed planting in this area includes stretches of lavender, pittosporum, and phormium, all with their own automatic irrigation system.
The olive tree, the main protagonist of the project, had previously been hidden in a place where it did not receive enough light. It was moved to a better location by the exit to the rear garden and framed with a new raised planter. Next to a new storage area reaching the pool zone, it helped define a composition inspired by Balinese daybeds. The pool coping was replaced with the same tiles used in the rest of the garden.
To make the most of the garden and solve the privacy issue, different shrubs were planted in an external planter along the street boundary wall.
