Barcelona’s Mediterranean climate allows garden work during most of the year, but choosing the right moment reduces plant stress, water use and replacement costs.
Autumn: the best planting window
As the heat subsides while the soil remains warm, trees, shrubs and perennials can establish roots before the following summer. It is also a good time to renew beds, improve soil and inspect drainage before heavier rain.
Winter: structure and preparation
The cooler months suit planned pruning, transplanting deciduous species and installing paving, irrigation or lighting. Avoid planting in waterlogged soil, and protect sensitive plants during cold spells.
Spring: complete and adjust
Spring is suitable for adding herbs, grasses and seasonal plants. Check emitters, controllers and mulch before hot weather arrives. New planting needs monitoring so moisture stays consistent without saturating the soil.
Summer: intervene only when needed
During the hottest weeks, limit planting and focus on irrigation, shade and observation. If construction must take place in summer, the establishment and maintenance plan should be defined from the first day.
A professional calendar must reflect orientation, wind, soil and the selected species. The goal is not simply to plant, but to ensure the garden continues to work after handover.
